From refugee to Sciences Po: The story of Tariq Aryobwal

The ongoing violence in Afghanistan has forced millions of people to flee their homes. Afghans make up one of the largest refugee populations in the world, with seven million people displaced in 2012 alone.

In 2013, the family of Muhammad Tariq Aryobwal fled to Paris after the death of a Taliban commander was blamed on Tariq's father, a journalist who was working for the French media. Tariq's brother had been kidnapped and killed in retribution.

Life was disrupted but Tariq's dream of becoming a diplomat continued. A former refugee student at the Association Pierre Claver, he is now studying international relations at the Paris Institute of Political Studies, also known as Sciences Po, a "grande ecole" or selective university that includes four French presidents, a UN secretary general and heads of state among its alumni and former students.
